Pintandwefall: Red and Blue Baby

This album was recorded on weekends over the last 18 months. I find that fact endearing because it speaks to my overall impression that this is a band that likes to keep themselves open to spontaneous developments, to the sudden and playful outbursts of creativity that can make a big difference. Even though this is the band's fifth full-length release, it is my first exposure to the band. For those in the same boat, here are a few things to know: Pintandwefall has been making music for over ten years and they've released five albums. They are popular in their native Finland and they have a growing fan base in Finland, Sweden, and other parts of Europe. They frequently wear, at least in publicity photos, small black masks and—like the Spice Girls—they have nicknames tied to the band's name. In this case, we have Dumb Pint, Cute Pink, Crazy Pint, and Tough Pint. The names should give you some small idea of what to expect here. This is a band that refuses to take itself seriously. The music, difficult to describe, is trippy, playful, and poppy. It's as though a garage rock band snuck into a studio set up to record a pop album and decided to record anyway. Some listeners will hear early punk rock from time to time; others will hear something I can only call hip. Think of the peppy beats of the B-52s mixed with a little more edge. Even though I like that comparison, it doesn't work. This is poppy, playful, and humorous music, hard to describe and harder to forget.

Did I like it? Mostly. The band's spontaneity, wit, and camp caught my attention but I wanted more of the garage band energy I heard in "Yours." I also admired the charming qualities of tracks like "Killer Dolphin," "I'll be around," and "Karaoke Kid." This is definitely not an album for readers expecting more extreme metal. This is something else entirely. If you are looking for something different, something that can show off your growing knowledge of Finnish music, this may be just the thing. My suggestion is to check out a few tracks or watch a couple of the band's music video. You'll know pretty quickly if this is for you.
