Mors Principium Est: Embers Of A Dying World

Finnish Melodic Death Metaller's Mors Principium Est (MPE) have returned with their sixth album entitled, Embers Of A Dying World and have retained their own unique blend of contemporary Metal sounds. With great production, MPE have managed to raise their game and deliver a fiercely heavy Melodeath record that can stand shoulders to shoulders with other bands of the genre (ie. Dark Tranquility, Insomnium, Children of Bodom).

'New' guitarist and chief songwriter, Andy Gillion (member since 2011) has lifted the band to new heights with his slick, speedy and shred filled guitar playing all throughout Embers Of A Dying World, but it's his depth as a songwriter that has made MPE even better as a band. Gillion's composing combined with Ville Vijanen's throaty and coarse vocals give this 6th record all sorts of dimensions that others of the genre don't manage to rise up to. Mors Principium Est's use of Keys/Programming is done in a way of creating drama and tension, as opposed to following the guitars and just doubling what they are doing. There is a cinematic feel to each song that the Keys add and against some great Melodeath/Progressive riffing, there is just so much intensity along with some expert musicianship.

Songs like "Reclaim The Sun" with its Operatic instrumental beginning that gives way to a tight, raucous verse filled with double kick drumming that leads into a dramatic conclusion. Gillion sets the stage for his guitar heroics on this track and doesn't let up through the entire record, along with his harmony doubling of his own stellar guitar work which is featured all over Embers Of A Dying World. "The Colours Of The Cosmos" is another furious track with over the top riffage, a jack hammer of a rhythm and spot on razor spewed vocals. The riffing is on high on this record and it just can't be contained.

Embers Of A Dying World is quite the step forward for Mors Principium, while also keeping a foot behind in what the band has always been about. There are calm and thoughtful moments on this new record, while also being quite Melodeath-like, so integrity is kept while forging ahead. This is quite a compelling and dark record and fans of this genre are in for a heavy treat.
