Zombie Motors Wrecking Yard: Supersonic Rock n Roll

Fans of bands like this can already guess what's on this album: a blend of heavy, sleazy, and playful heavy metal forged in the fires of Motorhead, Black Label Society, ZZ Top, and Red Fang. I know Red Fang hasn't been around as long, but have you heard them lately? That's a band for the ages. Anyway, Zombie Motors Wrecking Yard turns to the classic combination of sex, drugs, and rock and roll and they do so with swagger, attitude, and defiance.

This is the band's debut album and it makes a generally good impression. At times, it feels like a love letter to classic bands in the same genre. At other times it's blend of energy, power, and attitude sags a little. Things work best when the band simply pulls out all the stops and just plays fast and heavy rock. I'm thinking especially of "Fight Fight Fight," "God of No," and "Love for Speed." On those tracks, the band has the most energy and presses forward with power and intensity. Other tracks stew a little too long in blues-inflected mid-tempo rockers. These tracks weren't bad but when these guys let loose, the energy and passion are just that much better. I really liked the energy of "Fight Fight Fight" but wanted even more from the manifesto-like qualities of "Supersonic Rock n Roll" or "Roll n Burn." Aside from these minor quibbles, there's no denying that Zombie Motor Wrecking Yard plays with fire and I suspect they'll make fans in places wherever sweat, drink, speed, and rock and roll hold sway.
