Veteran Dutch death metal act Antropomorphia have now been pulverizing listeners for close to three decades, their old school approach seeing them consistently winning over new fans who like their metal brutal and evil. Sermon ov Wrath is their latest Metal Blade release, containing 9 tracks of bombastic venom that pushes all the right buttons and obliterates everything in its path. One look at that cover art and I'm sure you will fully understand what you are in store for; this is evil, brutal stuff, Ferry Damen's inhuman growls storming over a barrage of boiling, toiling riffs and gargantuan grooves. "Suspiria de Profundis" is a monstrous song, featuring some crushing riffs, while ""Murmur ov the Dead" is a massive plea to Lucifer, the band adding in some intoxicating tremolo picked guitar patterns alongside the booming riffs and thunderous drum blasts. There's a doomy vibe to the lengthy "Crown ov the Dead", and Marc van Stiphout's leathery lead bass work helps drive the meaty headbanger "Within Her Pale Tomb ov Putrid Lust", one of a few tunes here with deliciously evil yet somewhat hilarious titles. Perhaps the strongest track here is saved for last, the steamrolling "In Bestial Decadence", an intense descent in vintage styled death metal with plenty of groove.
Overall this is a very strong album, and although some 'similarity fatigue' sets in on a few songs, there's no denying the power that the majority of Sermon ov Wrath contains. Though nowhere hear a household name, Antropomorphia seem more than ready to play with the big boys of the genre.
