Torment is the 12th studio album from legendary death metal act Six Feet Under, which now consists of vocalist Chris Barnes, bassist/guitarist Jeff Hughell (Brain Drill) and drummer Marco Pitruzzella (Brain Drill, Anomalous, Sleep Terror). It's no surprise that parts of Torment are of a more technical, groove laden nature due to the influence of Hughell & Pitruzzella, who blazed similar paths with Brain Drill, but with the unmistakeable bark/grunt of Barnes, it's no doubt a Six Feet Under album. Tunes such as "The Separation of Flesh From Bone", "Sacrificial Kill", "Schizomaniac", "Bloody Underwear", and "Exploratory Homicide" blend elements of technical metal with the bands normal penchant for gore driven death, while more mid paced crushers such as "Obsidian", "Slaughtered As They Sleep", and "Knife Through the Skull" are more old school in their approach, the plethora of massive, crushing riffs never ending and providing for plenty of headbanging moments. Barnes for his part is always going to be the focal point, his barking, grunting delivery as always a 'take it or leave it' for some, but he's easy to understand despite the harshness of his spewing, and you have to give the guy credit for having a unique style. In the end, the success of Torment will come down to a few things; is it heavy & brutal enough, and are the songs memorable? The answer is yes on both fronts, as this thing brutalizes from start to finish, the riffs are monstrous, and the grooves thunderous. It's basically what you want from a Six Feet Under album, so mission accomplished.
