Here's another solid late 2016 release from the folks at Pitch Black Records, the self-titled debut from French metal act Debackliner. Odd name for a band, but the music here is anything but, the guys obviously having a soft spot for early '80s metal, specifically the early days of Iron Maiden, so be on the lookout for energetic anthems chock full of furious guitar riffs and galloping rhythms. "Pandora" is about as good an opener as you'll hear, and highly addicting track with a great hook and plenty of twin harmony guitar lines. The more power metal inspired "Rise of Angel" even throws in some harsh vocals alongside the high pitched wailing of lead singer Bob Saliba, a guy who has some serious pipes and lets it all hang out throughout this album. "Children of the Night" could have been a leftover from Maiden's Powerslave album, an epic & majestic sounding tune with some seriously tasty guitar riffs, intricate rhythms, and those mighty vocals. Other standout songs include the crunchy "Erase the Hordes", the blistering, Iced Earth influenced "Mr. Jack", and the two lengthy epics that fill the back end of the CD, "The Omega" and "Jolly Roger". Here, the band once again mix Iron Maiden/Iced Earth influences, the guitars huge, the leads majestic, and the rhythms completely sweeping you off your feet.
Debackliner are a very talented band, and it's a shame that this album pretty much flew under everyone's radar in 2016. In case you missed this one, make sure you seek it out, as it's a damn fine set of vintage sounding metal from a band that I'm sure we'll be hearing plenty from in the not too distant future.
