Celestial Mistress is the new Suicide Records EP release from Gothenburg, Sweden based sludge/stoner trio Cities of Mars, clocking in at just under 30-minutes and containing just three lengthy tunes of doom laden might. With guitar, bass, and drum configuration, plus all three members lending vocals, the band have a pretty large & powerful sound, which you can readily hear on kick off track "Gaze of Leviathan", as lumbering guitar riffs and high pitched vocals lay waste everything in sight. "Beneath a Burning Sun" mixes in some psych styled atmospherics amid booming Black Sabbath influenced riffs, while the 11+ minute title track again takes the road to psychedelia with some prog thrown in for good measure, as lilting guitar chords drop in between the mammoth riffing, the occasional lead guitar bursting through the haze as if grasping for air. Before you know it, it's all over and any stoner/doom/slude/psych fan will be left wanting more. Though the tracks here do lack some variety, you can clearly hear the talent of the trio, and it will be interesting to watch them continue to create heavy music of this nature in the not too distant future.
