Here we have a little 4 song EP from the folks over at Napalm Records, titled Funky Queen by the Belgium act Black Mirrors. Billed as a bastard offspring of 'Janis Joplin, Jack White, Anouk, Nirvana and Queens Of The Stone Age', Black Mirrors is a female fronted band who get off on old school hard rock with a stoner as well as psychedelic vibe. Lead vocalist Marcella Di Troia has this 'Janis Joplin meets Beth Hart' thing going on, and she pairs up well alongside the meaty guitar work of Pierre Lateur, especially on the groove laden title track as well as the heavy "The Mess". The more atmospheric "Canard Vengeur Masqué" shows a different side to the band, bluesy yet psychedelic, Marcella's vocals powerful and sultry, while their cover of the MC5 classic "Kick Out the Jams" is a lot of fun, packed with a punk attitude and plenty of fuzz soaked guitar riffs.
If Funky Queen is any indication of what we can expect from this band, I'll be waiting patiently for whatever is next to come.
