Chubby, Popa: The Catfish

Ted Horowitz, aka Popa Chubby, has been a staple of the New York blues and rock scene for a number of years and has recently released his twenty-sixth album The Catfish. Looking through his website he describes his performance style as "the Stooges meets Buddy Holly, Motöhead meets Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson."

Joining Chubby (guitars, vocals, percussion, drums, bass, keyboards) are Dave Keyes (piano, organ, vocals), Dave Moore (drums), Matt Lapham (bass), Tipitina Horowitz (trumpet) and Rich Monica (drums).

The first track "Going Downtown See My Old Gal Sue" is pretty much what you can expect from this album, excellent heavy blues riffs and fiery soloing with gritty yet soulful vocals. On "Good Thing" choppy rhythms and rollicking piano makes for some catchy toe tapping blues rock. "Cry Till It's a Dull Ache" is another blues rocker but my favourite is the Everly Brother's classic "Bye Bye Love", done as an instrumental and featuring reggae infused rhythms and a great groove with organ accents all the way through. Another great track is the laid back "Wes Is More" where Moore puts on his jazz hat creating an infectious shuffle groove. The bass and guitar solos fit the song perfectly.

Heavy blues rock with splashes of funk and jazz is the basis of The Catfish and Chubby and his band do a great job. Easily recommended for blues rock fans everywhere.
