Holz, Bob: Visions & Friends

As I stated in my review of Bob Holz's first album as a band leader titled A Vision Forward the drummer has been around the jazz scene for a number of years now and has worked with a multitude of artists. Holz and his band are back with their second album Visions & Friends and like their first one this indeed hits all the right spots.

On a somber note, as many of you have undoubtably heard, the untimely passing of legendary guitarist Larry Coryell has hit the jazz world hard. As to be expected he adds some fabulous passages throughout and he will be greatly missed.

Holz and his band have made an excellent follow up with Visions & Friends. Highlights are many including the funky jazz rock of the infectious opening track "Flat Out", the at times dreamy melodicism of "Take It From Maurice", a tribute to "Earth Wind & Fire", the grooving jazz fusion of "Five Times The Winner" where Coryell and bassist Ralphe Armstrong are on fire offering some great solos and the more laid back "Last Stop" with its light and airy melody making it a great summer track. The excellent electric piano solo in "Jemin Eye'n and the Latin infused "Rodrigo Reflections" where Coryell excels on acoustic guitar are more great highlights.

To put it simply Visions & Friends is a wonderful jazz fusion album with outstanding musicianship and superb melodies that will hang around for days. What's not to like?
