Godstopper / Grizzlor: Split 7
Godstopper's tracks on this split are heavy, interesting, and surprising. The first track "Down Here for Long," is a solid sludge track, one with vocals that reminded me a little of Mastodon (especially in those moments when they reach for the higher notes. The other track, "Cellophane," is more indebted to pop sensibilities and structures even though it's also pulling apart people's tendencies to settle for less. I liked the catchy line "it's just cellophane," something I might find myself singing long after this review is over. It's not the best song in the world, but I appreciated it for what it was doing.
Godstopper's two tracks take up about as much space as Grizzlor's single track. Even though Grizzlor is best described as a noise rock band, the music here is more or less accessible to the uninitiated. And yet, the vocals are abrasive and crazy, the riffs angular and outrageous, and the drums are there to hold it all together. I didn't like this track as much as "Down Here for Long," but I liked stretching my ears and my mind for the 7 minute duration. And here I was hoping that "Jack and Diane" would be a cover song--haha. Check out the cool cover art, though!
