Zombie Assault: Video Nasty

One of the coolest things about this album is the way it opens and closes with an 80s style synthesizer, one that plays just the kind of melody you'd expect from a VHS horror film. For all I know, it's been lifted from one of the movies it pays homage to here. What I do know is that after listening to this album several times, I still get chills down my spine from that synthesized opening track. I'm a sucker for 80s horror films and this album certainly plays to that interest. Readers likely know the reference to "video nasties," the British expression for the dozens and dozens of horror movies banned from home release during the 1980s. A list of these films may be found online if you're curious to know what's on there. I'm assuming that most of you have seen at least a handful of them.

Zombie Assault is the brainchild of Cory and Shaun from Putrescence and its purpose is simply to pay tribute to classic Swedish death metal, grindcore and d-beat. Putrescence is a terrific band and this side project gives fans a little more to enjoy. Not surprisingly, the band draws on H. P. Lovecraft for several tracks, including "From Beyond, "Cthulhu," and "She's Giving Me the Innsmouth Look." The other tracks pay tribute to 80s Italian films. Like those films (and those Lovecraft stories), this is wild and scary stuff, well worth checking out. Musically, Zombie Assault is heavy, hard-driving. It's rarely subtle but always strong. The band isn't reinventing anything here; instead, Zombie Assault is just having fun with the music these guys love. Check out "Cthulhu," if only for its masterful use of the cultic cry "Ia! Ia!"
