Peter Erskine New Trio: In Praise Of Shadows
I first became aware of Peter Erskine with his trio work for ECM Records. Well, he has a new trio. Here the drummer is backed by Vardan Ovsepian (keyboards) and Damian Erskine (electric bass).
As you might expect the musicianship is second to none. The players make the most of the trio format, each one adding their expertise and virtuosity without leaving the melody behind. This is complex stuff but also highly addictive. Again, that says a lot about these fine players of modern jazz.
The disc leads off with the hauntingly beautiful "Sukiyaki", a melancholic tune featuring electronic whistle from Judd Miller and an excellent bass solo. Erskine displays a soft touch behind the kit showing why finesse is as important as power. "What If" is much more upbeat with snazzy keyboard lines and Erskine keeping up the pace with great aplomb. The repeating keyboard motif had me reeled in from the beginning. One of the catchiest tunes is the fusion of "Each Breath", a blending of world music and jazz. The percussion and tribal rhythms are at the heart of this tune helped along by the cello work of Artyom Manukyan (cello).
The disc ends with the impressive "All That Remains", a mood laden piece featuring Erskine's adept cymbal work and rolling keyboards/piano that you just have to hear. Yes, it is that good.
There have been many excellent jazz recordings in 2016 and In Praise Of Shadows is no exception. Erskine and his band show their sublime skill on each and every track. Highly recommended.
