Andersen, Arild: The Rose Window

A series of articles titled European Jazz Legends in the magazine Jazz thing started in 2013 with the purpose of bringing European jazz musicians to light. Coinciding with the articles are live CDs featuring stalwarts of European jazz. There have been five concerts/CDs per year with 2017 marking the end of the series. A book will follow in 2018 which will include all the articles and discussions of the concert series.

This CD represents the sixth article featuring Arild Andersen live at Theater Gutersloh titled The Rose Window.

Andersen began his career in the late '60s/early '70s as the bassist in the Jan Garbarek Quartet. He has gone on to release twenty-one CDs on the ECM label and has worked with countless jazz artists from around the world.

The first track "Rose Window" is very much ethereal in nature with atmospheric bowed bass with a sometimes ominous tone. The bass takes on some deep cavernous notes with piano continuing the melancholic theme. "Science" is somewhat more upbeat with the piano, bass and drums working magically together in a complex blending of notes. The bass and piano solos are excellent and the band's subtle but stellar chops are on full display. Some great interplay and improvising in this one. With "The Day" the tone and feel is much softer including a slow moving bass solo that is really quite splendid. All in all The Rose Window is an excellent and varied work that should especially appeal to fans of European jazz. Easily recommended.
