Gallo, Ron: Heavy Meta

Garage rock, punk rock, glam rock, whatever you want to call the new album from former Toy Soldiers' front man Ron Gallo, the fact is Heavy Meta is one of the more vibrant and attitude filled discs I have heard in a while. The core of the band is Ron Gallo (lead and backing vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, korgistan, casio), Dylan Sevey (drums) and Joe Bisirri (electric guitar, bass, synthesizer, Wurlitzer, korgistan, backing vocals). The band's first album Ronny was released in 2014 that apparently had the band going in a poppier direction. That is not the case here as this is pure in your face rock and roll. The guitar playing is excellent with just the right amount of distortion and fuzz giving some of these tunes a heavy glam sound.

The first track "Young Lady, You're Scaring Me" is a catchy reverb soaked offering that hearkens back to '70s heavy rock stylings. Some searing guitar solos and catchy vocals with an ending flurry of heavy guitar makes this a fine start to the album. The punky edged "Put The Kids To Bed" is another super catchy track as is the punk/glam rock mix of "Kill The Medicine Man" with lyrics touching on the perils of drug addiction.

My favourite track is "Black Market Eyes". It's a nice mixture of acoustic and electric guitar with a Led Zeppelin feel. Great stuff for sure.

Heavy Meta is high octane fueled '70s inspired hard rock with more than the occasional nod to glam. I'm thinking T. Rex as a strong reference point. If that's your bag you should really give this one a listen.

Released on New West Records.
