With Thill Smitts Terror once again assaulting listeners with their brand of nightmarish, almost avant-garde black metal, Norway's Slagmaur seem content to continue to hide their identities with garish masks & costumes and at the same time deliver music that's totally out of this world. For some, 'out of this world' will have a totally different meaning; this is not your typical black metal by any means, almost devoid of blast beats, filled with industrial elements, chanting, classical passages, and all sorts of other oddities. The vocals are also in Norwegian, which only further adds to the mystery. "Bestemor Sang Djevelord" has some heavy riffs and futuristic synths, almost a militaristic Rammstein type effect, while the near 12-minute "Hekseskritt og Djevelritt" is as dissonant and disturbing as anything you'll hear this year.
Without a doubt, Thill Smitts Terror is one hellish ride, though I'm not sure it's one I'll be taking again, but if your tastes in black metal run to the unique and avant-garde, by all means enter into this unforgettable nightmare.
