Comparisons to fellow Polish act Riverside are bound to happen, but with their latest release Foreward, Disperse are poised to forge their own path 'forward'. Though melodic progressive metal is a good way to describe their sound, Disperse also add in elements of pop, prog, and jazz into their dynamic and eclectic style. Gorgeous vocal harmonies drift over enchanting guitar layers, intricate rhythms, and the frequent heavy riff bombast, axe-hero in waiting Jakub Żytecki pulling out all the stops and delivering a sizzling performance. Though his vast array of blazing lead lines and djent-like riffs are eye catching, he's not the only star here; vocalist Rafał Biernacki contributes some truly passionate passages as well as alluring keyboards, while Bartosz Wilk (bass) and Bartosz (drums) offer up rock solid rhythms throughout. "Surrender" is an incredible track, filled with pop hooks but wildly intricate arrangements, while "Bubbles" comes across almost like a mix of a child's lullaby and crushing bottom heavy prog-metal. There's memorable fare everywhere you turn, catchy yet complex tunes such as "Tomorrow", "Tether", "Stay", "Neon", and "Kites" seamlessly blending elements of Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Steven Wilson, Dream Theater, and TesseracT for a truly mesmerizing listen. Even the lengthy prog instrumental "Does it Matter How Far?" dazzles, filled with bubbling keys and tasty guitar lines.
In the end, Foreward is a joy to listen to, and Disperse are without a doubt a young band to keep a very close eye on over the months and years ahead. Highly recommended!
