Australia's kings of raucous stoner rock Mammoth Mammoth are set to unleash their latest platter of riff rock for Napalm Records, titled Mount the Mountain. This new album contains ten new tracks that once again showcase their Black Sabbath-meets-Motorhead-meets-The Stooges style of beer soaked party rock. Mikey Tucker now takes over the vocal slot, and the band is rounded out by Ben Couzens on guitar, bassist Pete Bell, and drummer Frank Trobbiani.
Much of what's on display here is fun, brainless, sort of punky retro rock & metal, with tunes like "Hole in the Head", "Spellbound", "Kickin' My Dog", and "Sleepwalker" containing uptempo rhythms and crunchy riffing that might not be overly original, but are effective. "Epitome" has somewhat of a Bon Scott era AC/DC feel to it, and the anthemic "Hard Way Down" will solicit some fist pumping and air guitar workouts. "Cold Liquor" is one of the more groove laden and doomy tracks here, sort of like a raunchy Down on speed, with some real tasty riffs and catchy hooks. Though much of Mount the Mountain is enjoyable enough, there's nothing here that's overly memorable that will make you want to come back over and over again...well, perhaps that half naked chick on the cover. There's much better stoner rock out there than this, but in the end, if you just want some fun tunes to drink beer to, this one will fit the bill just fine.
