Bokassa: Divide And Conquer

This album closes with "Stoner Anthem," not only one of the best tracks but also something that marks this band as significant. Despite the title, the song isn't a typical doom metal anthem. Sure, it's got a killer riff and it pushes forward with as much boogie as anyone could want. But it also has a line—"we're all doomed to die"—that gets repeated enough times that it gets a little scary. It reminded me of something a character in a horror novel would say, especially in the moment when they realize there's no escape from the creature. I'll be listening to "Stoner Anthem" regularly for the next several weeks. It's that good.

I probably shouldn't begin a review by talking about the album's closer, but "Stoner Anthem" is a powerhouse. As for the rest of the album, it's just as awesome. "Stoner Anthem" shows off a band that understands what good stoner rock should sound like and then gives it a dark and moody twist. The rest of the album captures a slightly more aggressive and fast side to things. The band describes their style as stoner punk, the perfect description. Here's a band that blends punk, hardcore, thrash, and stoner rock perfectly. Just check out "Retaliation," "Last Night," or "Genocidal" for a quick introduction to the band's stoner punk style. Any of those tracks would make any album hard to ignore but those are only three of the band's nine awesome tracks. "Five Finger" is a blistering number that shows off the band's thrashier side. The refrain "all filler, no killer," a line I found hilarious, is an added bonus. Did I mention this is Bokassa's debut album? Can I have some more of this band, please?
