Slagduster: Deadweight

If Sepultura mixed it up with Dangerous Toys you might possibly get a sound like Slagduster's Deadweight. The band is a mega-motivated unit built around a groove-laden bass player and his faithful drumming partner. Slagduster never misses a moment to change things up and down with tempo and thrash-like riffs. It's truly an arrangement unique in composition and complexity as shown in the third track "Profane Puppet," and its insightful lyrics: "Obtuse. Awkward. Jigsaw of nerves. Twister of words."

Vocalist Shane Sherman is a deep-throated style singer preferring to release heavy harmonic power growls from the diaphragm to varying degrees of success. He exceeds the bench mark in triumphant tracks "Mushroom Stomp," "Cheer Up Clown" and the funky hardcore final track "Untouchable." And sometimes we get lost with him, I reference the track "On All Fours" and are forced to reach for the enclosed lyric sheet, "Six months to live I'll spend regretting. Repress, blackout, I keep forgetting."

Yet I must tip my hat to a front man who maintains total vocal control to service songs rhythmically challenging yet still allowing the musical collective to bring home the Slagduster musical signature. Leadership and professionalism go a long way for band cohesion. Every track included sounds like it was well planned, rehearsed and recorded with a maturity often associated with bands of greater experience and longer discography. Slagduster has arrived.
