Here we have a mammoth 8CD set covering The Allman's 3-night stint at the famous Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, September 24-26, 2004. As a loving tribute to their late drummer Butch Trucks, who passed away recently, The Fox Box will be a must own for loyal fans of the band, and it represents the group still at the peak of their powers in 2004 performing in front of what can only be considered hometown fans at this legendary venue. The line-up for these shows was the road savvy veterans Gregg Allman (Hammond organ, piano, lead vocals), Jaimoe (drums), Butch Trucks (drums), Warren Haynes (lead & slide guitar, lead & background vocals), Derek Trucks (lead & slide guitars), Oteil Burbridge (bass), and Marc Quinones (congas, percussion).
Surprise guest stars pop up all over the place, but the main focus is of course on the band, and they run through so many of their classic songs as well as more obscure numbers throughout these three shows. The first concert on the 24th sees a monstrous near 30-minute "Blackhearted Woman", a venomous "Rocking Horse", brilliant musical interplay on "Mountain Jam", and a few interesting covers, including the Grateful Dead gem "Franklin's Tower" and the Derek & The Dominoes staple "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?". Haynes & Trucks are in fine form, dueling blistering lead & slide guitar solos all over the place, once again showing why they were one of the greatest guitar teams in rock history. Allman as always delivers stellar vocals throughout, and his smoky Hammond B-3 organ tones are lush and gorgeous. The second night has a host of highlights, including Haynes' classic "Soulshine", a rousing "Good Clean Fun", two wild jams in "Les Brers in A Minor" and "Instrumental Illness", a sizzling "One Way Out", and a few more interesting covers, The Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Layla", another classic from Derek & the Dominoes. For the third and final night, the centerpiece is a 40+ minute "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed", with both Haynes & Trucks delivering scorching solos as well as both drummers getting their moments to shine, along with a brilliant "Whipping Post", and fun takes on "Revival", "Every Hungry Woman", "Hoochie Coochie Man", and "Stormy Monday". Some nice surprises in this set too, including the heartwarming "Desdemona", "High Cost of Low Living", a hard rocking "End of the Line", the sultry "Dreams", and a dramatic "I Walk on Gilded Splinters", among many others.
Hard to pick a favorite of these three nights, as the band basically played a completely different set list each night and didn't duplicate any songs. If you happened to have the chance to see all three nights, it no doubt was a once in a lifetime event, but now that all three shows are available in one great sounding set, the entire world can experience these three shows in one epic live album. Spanning material from their entire recorded career and some lively covers, this instantly becomes one of the must have Allman Brothers Band live recordings that needs to be in your collection.
