A true DIY instrumental rock project, Waves is the second EP from veteran guitarist Lelio Padovani. He played all guitars and bass on these four songs, and programmed keyboards and drums. The result is a smooth and seamless 20-minute recording that emphasizes the man's fluid, melodic style.
Opener "Time Traveller" was written on keyboards but executed on guitar and is intended as part of a film score. (Padovani also has composed two full-length and three short-film soundtracks.) Next up is "Siren Song," on which Padovani played three guitars without overwhelming the listener or the material, and "Sunday" was recorded on a carefree weekend, as the relaxed melody and arrangement suggest. The title track closes the album and features "30-something de-tuned and re-tuned guitars" arranged as instruments in an orchestra, according to the guitarist's liner notes. Too bad its execution isn't as intriguing as its description.
That said, Padovani also is a music teacher, and if his students eventually learn to play as well as their instructor, a lot more rock guitar talent could be coming out of Parma, Italy.
