Have a soft spot for the early '80s metal scene, whether it be the NWOBHM or the classic sounds coming from the good old USA? Remember all the great music being created by Iron Maiden, Fates Warning, Manilla Road, Saxon, Cirith Ungol, Leige Lord, Mercyful Fate, Queensryche, Satan, Angel Witch, and Candlemass during that time period? Well, if you are one of those folks that has vintage heavy metal running through your veins, make sure you check out this debut Cruz Del Sur release from Germany's Lunar Shadow, titled Far From Light, an album chock full of vintage goodness, as heavy as it is epic. Comprised of eight tracks, most of which fall into the 6-10 minute range, Far From Light takes a dual guitar attack and delivers some tasty, memorable metal anthems. "They That Walk the Night" features a wealth of super crunchy riffs and weaving twin guitar solo madness, while the moody "Frozen Goddess" gallops along in early Iron Maiden fashion. The highly progressive "The Hour of Dying" contains some wonderfully crafted passages where the guitars, bass, and drums are all shifting and blazing around each other, culminating with some massive riffing and high pitched vocal wailing. For a more doom laden sound, check out the monstrous "The Kraken", while the majestic strains of "Cimmeria" take things into melodic power metal realms, no doubt an ode to the fabled fantasy hero Conan the Barbarian. I'd be remiss to leave out a mention of the gargantuan opener "Hadrian Carrying Stones", a crushing track featuring perhaps some of the albums most impressive riffs and solos, as well as some gorgeous acoustic guitar picking and A. Vornam's powerful vocals.
With so many great young bands out there these days paying homage to those classic early '80s sounds (think Ghost, Sumerlands, Visigoth, Trial, and Night Demon just to name a few) it's safe to say that we can add Lunar Shadow to that list of groups delivering some serious vintage metal goods. Don't miss out on this one!
