Consummation: Ritual Severance

This album opens with the briefest of summons (a horn blast) and then jumps into 20 minutes of raspy and intense black / death metal. I was initially intrigued by that horn because of the way it grabbed my attention and made me listen more carefully. I assumed, given the length of the songs, that the horn was part of an introduction, a means of preparing the listener for the forthcoming sonic assault. But Consummation doesn't do that; instead the music kicks into high gear and never lets up. Normally that's a good thing but I think Consummation would do better with a little more nuance. Yes, there's variety here and there but the band really wants to assault listeners with their sound in ways that are sometimes more exhausting than exhilarating. That's why I'm sad about the brevity of the horn blast. It should have been part of a larger attempt to engage listeners in the band's larger musical (and dramatic) goals. "Blighted Ovum" has more nuance and occasionally lets things simmer. Even though I admired the band's energy and thought their overall sound was good, I would have liked more variety on this one.
