Lâmina: Lilith

From time to time, I try to explain to kind but bewildered friends (or family members) why I love extreme music. Weary of the defensive position, I usually resort to vague statements like "it's just awesome" or "you wouldn't understand." I know there are better reasons—much better reasons—but I've always tended to shrug, recommend a few albums, or change the subject. When future such conversations occur, I may just hand people a copy of this album. Not only does it pay tribute to the stoner and doom styles of the past, it also stands as an independent witness of its contemporary power and relevance.

This album convinces from start to finish. Fans will immediately recognize Lâmina's indebtedness to Acid King, Sleep, Electric Wizard, and Black Sabbath but will love them all the more for it. The music combines the fuzz, the riffs, and the majesty of stoner rock with the ethereal beauty of the psychedelic. We already know the combination works, but Lâmina's overall sound, energy, and discipline make this one worth multiple listens. The band also does a great job keeping things interesting by changing up tempos and rhythms regularly. I loved faster tracks "Cold Blood" and "Education for Death" but had no trouble grooving to the (slightly) slower tracks like are simply awesome but the (slightly) slower tracks like "Psychodevil" and "Evil Rising." There are also a couple of long tracks ("Maze" and "In the Warmth of Lilith") that show off the band's ability to compose songs that are tightly interlocked that never resort to mere indulgence. Fans of stoner rock, doom metal, and the psychedelic will find plenty here to enjoy. Listen to "Cold Blood" and "Education for Death" if you're in a hurry but don't overlook "Maze" and "In the Warmth of Lilith." This is a terrific album and Lâmina certainly has my attention.
