There are times when being a reviewer is just so much fun. Reviewing Sweden's Skyron Orchestra is one such case. The first time you hear the self titled CD, you are instantly propelled back to the late 60s. It is that huge organ sound of Anna Glans that does it. You have one part Jefferson Airplane, one part Allman Brothers, and one part Pearls Before Swine all mixed together into a dark, brooding mix of psychedelic pop. Try listening to "Exploding Mind" without tye-die and bright flowers coming into your minds eye.
At first listen you get the feeling of "been there, done that", but with each listen you get a new experience and you really feel that new behind all that retro-sound. Veronica Lostjarna has this great Grace Slick husky voice. Tomas Modig plays his guitar with just enough distortion to really fill in all the gaps that the Organ leaves. His solos and counter melodies are excellent.
Skyron Orchestra will appeal to anyone that enjoys mixing the old with the new. Lostjarna's accent is a little heavy, but it actually adds to the psych feel of the CD. If you can handle a heavy, heavy organ, then this CD should have a slot in your changer.
