Supplanting the vile Live at the Dynamo EP (released against the band's wishes), My Dying Bride's career retrospective sees them return to Holland, this time to the 013 venue and sharply captured shows that display the legendary doom metal band's assets to greatest effect.
Covering early songs such as "Symphonaire Infernus at Spera Empyrium" from Bride's Latin pastiche period to brand-new efforts showcasing a faster, rockier and streamlined approach, Voice of the Wretched contains everything the band's loyal followers have come to expect: Riveting passages of head-banging chug, laments over love lost, gone awry or otherwise thwarthed, somber, spine-chilling string synth, echoing flanged guitar work, larynx-throttling DM vocals and anguished "clean"-throated vox. For those fans of the true metal who have been living under a rock for the past 15 years, as well as existing Bride acolytes, Voice of the Wretched simply cannot be surpassed in its sheer intensity and masterful muscianship. Keep a box of tissues handy.
