Beneath My Sins: Valkyries of Modern Times

The French symphonic metal band Beneath My Sins formed in late 2015 after Emma Elvaston (lead vocals) and Clement Botz (guitar, ocarina, clarinet, piano, backing vocals) ditched their previous band Evolvent wanting a fresh new direction. Rounding out the lineup is Pascal Clifford (bass guitar) and numerous guests including a large choir and violin by Charles Carrier.

The end result is their brand new disc titled Valkyries of Modern Times. Beneath My Sins plays pretty typical symphonic metal similar in style to bands like Epica and Nightwish but with perhaps less bombast. The fact there are no synthesizers might have something to do with that. The female lead vocals are good but not quite as strong as in the aforementioned bands. Please don't take that as a negative because the vocals are still very nice so if you enjoy the style you will probably be on board. Elvaston certainly sounds classically trained. Lots of heavy guitar crunch (although no solos), rapid fire drumming and huge violin orchestrations round out the sound. The use of choirs is certainly a highlight. The occasional beauty and the beast vocal moment also crops up. It is all well played and enjoyable, just nothing new under the sun.

We all know the symphonic metal genre is saturated with a number of talented bands. Beneath My Sins by and large do a good job here and if you are a fan of the genre this will be an enjoyable find for your collection.
