Necrot: Blood Offerings
The cover art for this album is straight out of the pulps: ghouls get hold of a baby and then proceed to offer it up in a twisted rite. The image is shocking and unholy, a nod not only to old school death metal but also to the overall bleak mood it creates. Because this is technically Necrot's first full-length album, I can't help but think of the baby metaphorically, as a humble musical offering to fans (and critics) who may be exacting, fickle, or excited. Extreme metal fans, like the gods of pulp fiction, like to be appeased.
What will they think of this latest offering from Necrot? They'll love it.
Blood Offerings comes after six years of hard work, the kind of work bands achieve when they know a debut album represents their introduction to the world. With this release, Necrot gives listeners a set of old-school death metal tracks that owe just as much to punk rock as they do classic bands like Bolt Thrower, Autopsy, and Master. I know that punk rock has always been a major influence but once you hear this album you'll see what I mean. Necrot hits hard, all the while creating a vibe that is fast and relentless. Not only that, the recording captures the fuzz and darkness of each track perfectly. Necrot is easily one of the best new death metal bands out there. I can't wait to catch them on the road.
I've been writing about this album as though it were the band's debut. Fans will remember that Necrot actually released an album last year but that was just a collection of their previously-released demos. I enjoyed that release and wrote that I couldn't wait to hear more. Now that I've heard what the band can do with a planned full-length, I'm even more impressed. This is the debut they wanted. As drummer Chad Gailey says, "the songwriting and performance on these eight songs is a step up from what people have heard previously. We fell that with this album, we have accomplished what we intended to create many years ago." He's right. The quality of the recording here is superb and the songwriting is solid, heavy, and intense. Check out "The Blade," "Beneath," "Breathing Machine," and "Blood Offerings."
