Vemod is the third release from Copenhagen black outfit Solbrud, and follows their successful album Jærtegn from 2014. Containing just four lengthy tracks, Vemod is epic in every way, steeped in atmosphere, dark drama, and raging violence. Comprised of Ole (Vocal & guitar),
Adrian (Guitar), Tobias (Bass), and Troels (Drums), this four-piece create a huge wall of sound, Ole's hellish rasps stabbing over the mix of lush soundscapes and relentless riffs & blast beats on the excellent near 13-minute opener "Det Sidste Lys". The juggernaut blasting kicks off "Forfald", nearly equal in length but a different beast altogether, as the twin tremolo riffing from Ole and Adrian march alongside the relentless rhythm barrage from Tobias and Troels, providing a powerful statement of classic black metal. Ole's vocals are more forceful here, his screams lethal and urgent, adding that extra dose of violence to this brutal piece. The atmospheric soundscapes return on the albums longest cut "Menneskeværk", a moodier track that brings in some doom elements to go along with the bands penchant for pulverizing speed, while the more galloping "Besat af Mørke" closes things out in fine fashion, a pummeling yet quite majestic slice of contemporary black metal.
If you are in the mood for some classy black metal that is also truly brutal at the same time, you won't be disappointed with Vemod. A very fine effort indeed.
