Ulsect: Ulsect
The self titled debut offering from the Dutch Death Metal band Ulsect is now upon us. This 8 track angular, brooding and dark Metal release features current and ex-members of forward-thinking entities Dodecahedron and Textures. It is this combination that has led Ulsect down the rabbit hole of their own self proclaimed, "Post Death Metal" path of progressive heaviness and off-kiltered dissonance.
Chaotic rhythms along with guttural vocals are at the forefront of what Ulsect are about. Opening tune, "Fall to Depravity" incorporates powerful, chunky rhythms with a ferocity. "Our Trivial Toil" harkens a dark and brutal side that is full of blast beats and viciously gravel throated vocals that pummel you into submission.
Ulsect are attempting to raise the depths of Death Metal into a new future with this advantageous debut record. The self titled release is a lucid, atmospheric and relentless "Post Death Metal" release that some might find a tad tedious and mundane as the record moves along. Ulsect are trying to farm new territory, but overall it seems to be a bit much, even with just 8 songs in total.
