Vengeful Ascension is the seventh full-length release from New Orleans extreme metal veterans Goatwhore, as they once again find their home on Metal Blade Records, who they have worked with since 2009. Containing ten new tracks, Vengeful Ascension once again sees the band churning out Luciferian themed material the mixes black metal, doom, death metal, hardcore, and sludge. Always one of the more unique bands on the scene, Goatwhore don't disappoint here, kicking things off with the groove laden yet brutal "Forsaken" and never looking back. The steamrolling title track has some killer riffs as well as delightful growls from frontman Ben Falgoust, while Zack Simmons' maniacal drum blasts propel the violent "Chaos Arcane" into insane blackened death metal realms. Those who gravitate towards Goatwhore's grinding, doomy material will love "Where the Sun is Silent" and the punishing "Decayed Omen Reborn", each one chock full of Sammy Duet's massive riffs, but if it's the more blackened fare you crave, check out "Drowned in Grim Rebirth" (featuring some fantastic, cavernous riffing) and the manic "Abandon Indoctrination", two brutal speedsters that combine the best of black & death metal into one cohesive slab of extreme metal.
For my money, Vengeful Ascension is heavier and more brutal than 2014's Constricting Rage of the Merciless, and ultimately more enjoyable. You be the judge, but either way, it's another solid release from this long running Louisiana heavy metal institution.
