Gateway to Hell: Clovers

This band has a classic self-description: "a groovy, ghoulish mix of doom metal and the laughter of ugly children, with a touch of inebriation and shame." I admire the band's humor and the implied point that they want to play music and not worry about posturing. Bands can be heavy without constantly pointing it out. They also point to John Carpenter as a major influence, which is always a bonus.

If you listen to this EP, you'll hear a familiar blend of Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and Danzig—and you'll likely enjoy it. Gateway to Hell is a solid doom band that wears 70s hard rock on its collective sleeve. Even though I enjoyed all the tracks here, things really caught fire for me with "The Drizzard." That song's main riff was superb and the lyrics were smart and insightful. I also really liked "Rain for Days" because it risked taking a break from the beefy rhythms of doom metal for a moment of reflection. It's also really catchy. Things close out with the excellent "Scorched Earth." I'm ready for more Gateway to Hell!
