Jackyl: 25

Though Georgia's long running heavy Southern Rock act Jackyl are probably best known for having the audacity to use a chainsaw as a musical instrument not only in the studio but also on stage, the fact of the matter is that this band have also churned out some pretty catchy and hard rocking material over their 25 year career. That being said, Mighty Loud Records is now presenting 25, a compilation of some of Jackyl's best songs recorded by the band between 1992 and 2017, and it's a good one that showcases just how capable this band have always been.

The opening 1-2-3 punch here of "I Stand Alone", the ultra-catchy "Down on Me", and "When Will It Rain" are all excellent hard rockers, utilizing the commercial metal flair of the late '80s and mixing with Southern Rock styles, Jesse James Dupree's high pitched wails blending with plenty of catchy hooks and crunchy guitar riffs. The chainsaw pops up on the raunchy, bluesy Southern strains of "The Lumberjack", and while it's debatable whether a chainsaw belongs in rock music, it sure is unique to say the least. Other highlights here on this collection include the anthem "Push Comes to Shove", the groove laden & metallic cruncher "Cut the Crap", the swamp rock of "Kill the Sunshine", and heavy rockers "Favorite Sin" and "Screwdriver". There's even a fun cover of Black Oak Arkansas' "Hot and Nasty", Dupree doing a great impression of Jim Dandy on the vocals. 25 is basically a strong and fun set of songs from a band that were probably never taken too seriously but actually pumped out some pretty good tunes-check this out if you failed to investigate Jackyl previously, and they are also on tour playing at a venue near you.
