Easy Trigger: Ways Of Perseverance
It's album number two for Italy's Easy Trigger as they follow up their Bullshit with some Ways Of Perseverance. And it's a good thing that these lads stuck to their guns and persevered long enough to get a second album out there, for amongst line-up comings and goings, the cryptically named Nico on vocals, Caste on guitar, Vale on bass and Pane on drums, find Easy Trigger harking back to the 80s in quite some style.
To be fair, you can hardly claim that any band hammering out good time party rock are cutting edge these days and yet with a crunchier, more modern guitar sound, the melding of old school ideals to a contemporary sound makes for a mighty fine ride. New vocalist Nico hurtles out confident side swipes, barking, howling and snarling as he somehow still manages to keep it melodic. When he tucks in tight with a Caste led guitar riff, then "The Watchmaker" keeps perfect time. "Sold Out" and its more Black era Metallica riff shows a different side to the band, a deeper, harder edge played out with a real swagger as Pane's drums nail everything down hard. Add in a strangely Faster Pussycat like chorus and a blend that should never work, actually comes together without a hitch.
With only ten tracks on show, Ways Of Perseverance is a relatively short in and out from the band and yet that brevity leaves you wanting more, and as you reach for the play button once more, the kicking grooves of "Land Of Light", deeper, darker strike of "Turn To Stone" and frantic parry of "Tell Me A Story" really begin to dig their claws in pretty deep. There's no way of denying that there's little new here, or indeed nothing by way of innovation. Yet when a guitar is cranked up and pummelled with real passion, a singer believes every word he breathes and a rhythm pairing get about the business of mastering the craft of bottom ending it all, the results can be surprisingly exciting. Easy Trigger are far from perfect and their Ways Of Perseverance could do with some refinement, but that doesn't stop a good time from being a damn good time.
