Tower of Babel: Lake of Fire

Yngwie Malmsteen made a huge impact on my musical life and quiet obviously across the metal universe. Tower of Babel is no exception to this fact and demonstrates how effectively it can delve into that brilliant influence and remain vital and original as with the first track "Dragonslayer, "a Malmsteen-tinged barn burner if you ever heard one. But then they switch to Rainbow/Dio vibe in "It's Only Rock'n Roll' and pull off an elaborate yet groovy Blackmore-splashed demonstration of what Tower of Babel can reach.

"Lake of Fire" the title track is where the band departs from intertwined influences and takes their own path to a progressive metal promised land. It has an aggressive vocal from a singer who sounds freer to explore his sonic identity and finally shine. Guitarist Joe Stump deserves enormous praise for studying some of the greatest guitars in rock history but playing in a superb manner that carves out his place in the metal world. The next three tracks, "Addicted," "Midnight Sun," and "Eternal Flames" are perfect vehicles for Tower of Babel to stand on their own and belt out bluesy harmonies without an ear to past idols.

I'm an adherent of the Dio formula that includes a keyboardist with a keen understanding of rock arrangements. The band is blessed to have a stellar ivory innovator who adds acoustic showmanship throughout the album. My favorite track "Eyes of the World" is a moody masterpiece of epic proportions and clocks in at six minutes fifty-seven seconds making it the longest song on the release. If Stump and the band are betting this lineup will build the perfect performance, I see that bet and raise you three more albums. Even the most gifted producers cannot copy players loving their craft and respecting each other. You can hear it in their efforts. Lake of Fire was born in that union of souls.
