Carnivore: Carnivore (reissue)
Carnivore was a Brooklyn thrash band that existed for nearly nine years and was fronted by vocalist/bassist and songwriter Peter Steele who become a large than life character in his next band Type O Negative. The album opens with "Predator" and the first thing you hear and which continues throughout the track list is a strange but strong non-Hispanic version of Suicidal Tendencies.
The lyrics are fun and interesting as in the title track "Carnivore" which calls attention to the "children of technology." The guitar work is superb as in "Male Supremacy" where it leaps forward to a power metal mode akin to early Metallica. Steele calls out the "children of technology" again to blame them on becoming a "Thermonuclear Warrior" and ruining the Earth.
I especially like the drumming on this disc. Maybe because Steele was also the bassist it jams more than a great deal of thrash bands I have heard in the past. It's quite hard to believe I am reviewing another defunct band with an archival reissue who vocalist has passed. But that is the case here again. You can hear his mind at work with interesting lyrics about the state of the world and technology. And you can even notice him working out the Type O Negative vocal style that would become his trademark.
It was a great touch to include a few demos to the mix of the album. They serve to remind us of the endurance of art and sadly the frailty of human life during that vital art. May its reality make us take heed of the day's events and not take anything for granted. Carnivore did itself justice and deserves to be played loud and listened to again.
