No Answer is the latest MoonJune Records release from Serbian guitarist Dusan Jevtovic, and here he's joined up by keyboard player Vasil Hadzimanov and drummer Asaf Sirkis for nine original compositions recorded live at La Casa Murada Studios in Catalunya, Spain. Though essentially a jazz album at its core, No Answer contains many other elements, such as rock, avant-garde, and prog, with Jevtovic's multi-faceted guitar style taking the listener down many twists and turns. The dark "A Ver" is a perfect example of some of the intrigue he can bring to the table, as mysterious, dark lead melody lines drift and weave through an airy arrangement of electric piano and intricate drum patterns. "Lifetime" bursts through the speakers with reckless abandon, the heavy, fuzz-laden riffs, acrobatic keys, and pounding drums perfectly paying homage to the songs namesake, The Tony Williams Lifetime, while the speedy runs of "El Oro" recall some of the vintage work of the late John Abercrombie. Jevtovic trades jagged barbs with Hadzimanov's blazing electric piano on the energetic "Frusci", and shades of the legendary Terje Rypdal appear on the soaring title track, complete with a chilling guitar solo that is one of the highlights of the album.
The press notes state that much of No Answer will remind of an "ECM record label vibe filtered through Radiohead played at an intimate after hours jazz venue", and honestly, that not far from the truth. Overall, a tasty little album of various jazz styles from a locked in trio...check it out.
