Cinema: The Discovering of Time
Cinema is an intriguing project from Germany. The band was formed by ex-Tibet guitarist Jürgen "Pöngse" Krutzsch. The new disc is titled The Discovery of Time, which follows The Magix Box (2013), the follow up to the band's debut album Isolation released in 1984 and recently reissued by Sireena Records.
Although the project's output has been sparse the music on the other hand, at least with the new album (I have not heard the previous two) is excellent and extremely rewarding.
As far as labeling the music (I know, why do we have to do that), I would think space driven progressive rock with a heavy electronic vibe would suffice.
Right from the rapid keyboard intro on the disc's opening track "Riding the Iron Horse" I was hooked. Moody keyboard washes, spacey synth passages and stabbing shards of guitar will hopefully leave an indelible imprint on your brain, at least it did for me. Even a bit more trippy is the second track "Lost In Space". Wind effects and electronics create the mood laden backdrop followed by sudden bursts of intense sound occasionally permeating the soundscape. Somewhat creepier sounds emerge creating an expansive spacey atmosphere. Next up are two real showstoppers; "Frozen Time" and "Springtime". The former featuring crystalline guitar laid over a bed of dreamy keyboards recalling '70s period Floyd. Similarly on the latter the clean guitar reminded me of something off of Floyd's Division Bell, the tune "Coming Back To Life" in particular. On "Big City Night" the band really dip their hands in electronics, a sort of space/dance hybrid and the sampled horns work really well.
Another tidbit; the album was produced by Eroc (ex-Grobschnitt), so that tells you something right there.
There are no dud tracks here as every song has something to offer. So, what are you waiting for?

Cinema: The Discovering of Time Posted by Pete Pardo, SoT Staff Writer on 2017-10-05 14:36:20 My Score:
Here's a tasty little mix of prog-rock,fusion, ambient, and world music from former Tibet guitarist /keyboard player Jürgen Krutzsch and his fine cast of guest stars who go under the name of Cinema. Though they have a history that goes back to the mid '80s, The Discovery of Time is only their third release, so they are anything other than prolific. All instrumental, this latest release mixes Mike Oldfield styled ambient soundscapes with soaring David Gilmour/Pink Floyd influences guitar flights from the leader and three other guest six string masters. "Frozen Time" is a perfect representation of that sound, and could have been a leftover from any of Floyd's latter period albums, while "Springtime", "Big City Night", and "Riding the Iron Horse" offer up plenty of synths and electronics that will sinks their hooks into you and refuse to let go. Overall, a nice, pleasing listen that at times is almost a bit too laid back, but the performances are top notch and deliver plenty of class and sophistication.
