Transient Songs: Stealing Sand

The Seattle based band Transient Songs was formed in 2008 by Texas native Jon Frum and Andy Gassaway, who has since left the band. They released their first disc Cave Syndrome in 2010 followed by Foreign Rooms in 2013. This brings us to their latest release Stealing Sand.

By no means I am an expert in newer pop related bands so I was curious to hear what this band was all about. I have to admit I do have a soft spot for a good pop song or two so this one did intrigue me from the beginning. The band plays pop music but with a psychedelic/retro edge and I have to say this is a very good disc. If I had to reference who this band sounds like it would be The Church along with perhaps a touch of The Psychedelic Furs. Pretty good company I would say. The jangly psyche instilled guitar and laid back vocals in the album opening title track define the band's sound. Kind of dreamy in texture, certainly some psychedelic undertones and even the occasional discordant touch of guitar make this one a winner. "Branches Through the Trees" is a little more up tempo with that psyche vibe still quite prevalent. Moodier guitar jangling leads to a crunchier chorus in the lovely "Lost in the Middle" while "Shoppin' For Coffins" has more of an edge with thought provoking lyrics and interesting chord progressions. The fuzzy guitar tones in the catchy "If the Summer Resigns", the pretty acoustic guitar and cello in "All Said and Done" and the hard rocking "Drug Dreams" are more highlights.

Filled with melodic pop rock confections and pure psyche goodness, Stealing Sands is a disc I really enjoyed and will definitely revisit in the near future.
