Kissin' Dynamite: Generation Goodbye- Dynamite Nights (CD/DVD/Blu-ray)

As a celebration of their tenth anniversary Germany's Kissin' Dynamite have decided, in traditional hard rock fashion, to unleash a live album on the unsuspecting world. In those ten years the band has been pretty prolific releasing Steel Of Swabia (2008), Addicted To Metal (2010), Money, Sex & Power (2012), Megalomania (2014) and Generation Goodbye (2016.) I am of the opinion that there has been somewhat of a diminishing set of returns. I utterly loved Addicted To Metal and quite liked Money, Sex & Power in particular but I have found that they have been becoming more sterile and less fun as we have gone along.

Sterile is the word I would use to describe this live album, there's a sense that it's over produced and too perfect and the joie de vivre of their earlier career seems missing. Perhaps it has something to do with the band now being really ancient (they are now in the twenties!) When it's good, it's great so perhaps the problem is to do with the sheer amount of music here. Their best songs ("Supersonic Killer", "If Clocks Were Running Backwards", "Money Sex & Power" etc) are very much from the top draw but some of the others don't pass the required mark and drag things down. The blurb suggests that this was recorded at a hometown gig in Stuttgart, but surely there isn't a promoter who would ordinarily let Kissin' Dynamite play twenty six songs so possibly the band has recorded more than one or two gigs and is striving to give fans VFM, however, with judicious trimming this could have been a truly awesome celebration and a special full stop and the end of their first decade. Perhaps the DVD makes more sense but we weren't furnished with it.

Kissin' Dynamite: Generation Goodbye- Dynamite Nights (CD/DVD/Blu-ray)

My Score:

If a band is going to celebrate a special anniversary with a live album, Generation Goodbye- Dynamite Nights is the way to do it. Despite being in their mid 20's, German metal act Kissin' Dynamite have now been around for 10 years, and this concert recorded and filmed in front of an adoring crowd in Stuttgart allows them plenty of room to dip into a good amount of their catalog, which is now five studio albums deep. Though of course their more recent platter Generation Goodbye gets the most love here, you'll see a healthy sampling from all their albums, though Addicted to Metal, which in my opinion is their strongest, is sadly underrepresented.

Kissin' Dynamite of course are a throwback to '80s hair/glam metal days, their music full of energetic choruses, lots of 'hey, hey, hey', guitar solos, and upbeat rhythms, the kind of stuff that gets the fists pumping, the air guitars raging, and the lighters/cell phones lit up when the ballads come out. Plenty of anthems here, such as "DNA", "Money Sex and Power", "Only in the Rain", "Sex is War", and of course "Generation Goodbye". Though the band does occasionally dip into power metal mode ("Highlite Zone") and darker, groove laden fare ("She Came She Saw") for the most part this is pretty catchy metallic hard rock material that comes across strongly live. In fact I'd argue that most of these songs sound better here than on their studio counterparts.

Obviously, with 24 songs, there's a ton to take in here. This AFM set comes complete with the whole show on 2 CDs, as well as a DVD with the entire concert as well. Quality on both is excellent, and while it might be debatable whether a band like Kissin' Dynamite deserve such an 'epic' live release this early in their career, there's no denying the fact that the band have given their fans a complete bang for their buck with this jam packed live set. If you've never checked out Kissin' Dynamite and have a love for all things mid/late '80s commercial metal, put this live album on your immediate radar.
