Zauss: Diafonia Leitmotiv Waves
Zauss is a project that includes Swiss musician Markus Stauss (Spaltklang, Finnegans Wake, Überfall) and Italian avant-garde-ist Francesco Zago (Not A Good Sign, Yugen). In order to come up with a name for the project the musicians combined both their names, and viola, Zauss. Diafonia Leitmotiv Waves came out in 2014.
If you are at all familiar with Stauss (tenor saxophone) and Zago (electric guitar, loops) you will know that this type of music is incredibly hard to comprehend, let alone enjoy. Let's just say this will never appeal to the masses. These eleven tracks are completely improvised musings where distinguishing between noise and music is often a challenge. Often moody and unsettling, other times heavy, hummable melodies this is not. Describing individual tracks is a pointless endeavour as you really need to hear this for yourself and go from there. I do have to give props to both these artists for taking their creative juices and making an album that follows no trends whatsoever.
Bottom line is I will not likely return to this platter of avant-garde jazz rock but that's not to say this is devoid of talent or artistry. After all, we deal in a subjective field and as the saying goes your mileage may vary.
