Kulick, Bob: Skeletons in the Closet
Grammy Award winning guitarist/songwriter/producer, Bob Kulick (yes the older brother of Bruce Kulick, the former KISS guitar player), has released his very first solo album called, Skeletons In The Closet (Vanity Music). This 10 song album from the Meat Loaf, Blackthorne, Lou Reed, KISS, W.A.S.P., Skull, Balance alum is very much in the musical vain that has been his forté pretty much his entire career as a band member or as a hired gun...Hard Rock. Gritty, melodic, muscular and filled with a bunch of tasty guitar leads that has made Kulick a go to session guy all of the years.
Skeletons In The Closet features a slew of guest vocalists throughout, including Robin McAuley (Grand Prix, McAuley Schenker), David Glen Eisley (Guiffria), Dee Snider (Twisted Sister, Widowmaker) and Andrew Freeman (Last In Line) who all deliver solid performances within this first solo effort from Bob Kulick. Dee Snider's vocals on "London" add to the dark, Jack The Ripper theme, while McAuley lends his pipes to the riff heavy and MSG like, "Not Before You", which also features Bruce Kulick on Bass. An interesting, as well as odd inclusion, is a cover of the Shirley Bassey and James Bond theme song classic, "Goldfinger", that gets a kick up the ass and a Hard Rock re-do that is quite a different spin.
The Kulick Brother's have a chance to throw down a guitar solo duel, as they get to trade licks on the old Skull tune, "Guitar Commandos", which is all about life on the road. "India" is a rocker that is from Kulick's old band, Murderer's Row that has an Arabian flavor that flows underneath the heavy riffing of Bob Kulick's staccato right hand and features the vocals of David Glen Eisley.
Skeletons In The Closet is made of both newly penned material, one cover tune and songs from Kulick's past bands. This collection of tunes serves as both a nod to the past and also a step into the future for the infamous Bob Kulick. Though none of Kulick's former bands ever really became anything of note (though I personally dig the Blackthorne record with the great Graham Bonnet on vocals!) you get to hear the way that he crafts a song from back in the day to the present is very consistent. A feel of the late 70's/80's Hard Rock/Metal era is represented very prominently here and that's what Bob Kulick has always done the best.
