Nocturnus: A Farewell To Planet Earth (DVD)

Nocturnus was a heavy, doomy 'progressive death metal' outfit who had never released live video footage of their many stage shows. But A Farewell To Planet Earth is a collection of 3 stage shows filmed by fans. Seems these recordings were obtained from and endorsed by the now defunct band itself.

On the one hand the production quality is is seriously amateurish, the sound quality is awful, and the one and only camera angle is that of a mesmerized fan gazing unblinkingly at the stage.

But on the other hand, it has a certain charm to it. Unlike professionally produced DVDs, this one literally puts you right in the audience - bobbing and weaving heads, smoky atmosphere, lousy sound quality, and only one view of the performers. Also, in an improvement from professional videos, when the guitarist plays a solo you can actually watch his technique. No fancy artsy angles to frustrate you.

The music is essentially very good. Pity you can't really hear it. Recommended for fans. Others might want to first become familiar with the band's audio catalog.
