Twingiant: Blood Feud
The fourth album from Twingiant finds a band now truly stretching out, confident that their chosen path is the one true way to enlightenment. Doom, stoner, sludge and other spine-crushing monickers have rightly been bestowed upon the Arizona riff bruisers, yet it's the slight refinement in Blood Feud that really brings this band's big guns to bear. From their earlier days of brutality and bludgeoning, the slow evolution into an outfit still willing to steamroller over any target you choose, now find themselves able to do so with a caressing hand and smile (albeit evil) on their face. It's this latest turn that suggests why Blood Feud should hopefully find Twingiant knocking on the door marked 'big boys only'.
When they slow things down - and I do mean slooooow - "Kaishakunin" verges on extreme metal, Jarrod Le Blanc adding a crushing vocal outpouring that wants you to cower in fear. However, this is the exception now, the hammer slam that's surrounded by altogether more groove-fixated fare. "Ride The Gun" is the perfect tightrope walk, the guitars insistent, the drum rolling and rumbling, while the vocals still strip paint and create incredible tension. The added frisson of a gun being slowly loaded and then released, building a menacing threat that an angry but controlled guitar howl drives home. That you can't help convulsing to the beat of the drum and boom of the bass is the secret weapon here - and throughout Blood Feud.
Added fuzz brings a warmth to the otherwise austere "Re-fossilized", the often used attack of removing vocals from the equation a powerful tool. While "Poison Control Party Line" verges into the dangerous territory of the accessible, but again, with a wall of sound greeting you as the power and fierceness of what's on show builds into controlled ferocity, those of a weak disposition will still be running for the hills.
Right from the off Twingiant have shown huge promise and as they've matured, their ability to slowly evolve and grow has made their journey an ever more captivating one. Blood Feud, while still mining many of the stoner-doom seams that the band's early work relied on, findsTwingiant ready to break their own genre chains, and hopefully make their mark on a wider scale.
