The Playback are a new band from the Hudson Valley, New York comprised of J. Michael Prizzi (guitar), Travis Schifko (vocals), Randall Federighi (bass), and Kyle Buckley (drums). These guys play a bluesy brand of modern hard rock chock full of hooks, with more than a few nods to the classics but still fresh to appeal to younger audiences. This debut EP contains four tracks, and kicks off with the aggressive "Zero", a hook laden rocker fueled by memorable vocal melodies and some tasty riffing courtesy of Prizzi. The guitarists bluesy phrasing comes into play again on the moody "Serpent Sister", while the band opts for a more pop friendly, acoustic vibe on the upbeat "Al Capo", a great vehicle for vocalist Schifko . The EP closes out with the energetic "War in the Middle", easily the heaviest track here, complete with some thunderous rhythms and Hendrix/Wylde styled licks from Prizzi.
Overall, a solid EP that shows a band who have the songwriting chops and plenty of musicality to back it up. Looking forward to hearing what else they have up their sleeve, as I'm sure this is only the tip of the iceberg.
