Symetria: Symetria

New Jersey's own Symetria are steeped in Old School Metal of NJ of the 80's and 90's when bands like Overkill, T.T. Quick and M.O.D. ruled the Tri-State area and their self titled debut record is a throwback to that sound and time. Hard and heavy, you can just feel the denim & leather that flows within this Garden State quintet and the Metal that they are out to keep alive.

Under produced and very raw sounding is this debut 8 song album from Symetria. The band sounds like mix of old Suicidal Tendencies and Tool from their Opiate EP era. Vocals are in a poor man's Maynard James Keenan type of delivery with a very odd and jagged cadence, while the guitars are of a chugging and plodding variety with less focus on the riff and more on the background of the song, as opposed to a focal point. I found myself not drawn into the guitars at all, except for noticing the more basic harmonized twin guitar lines that are forced in. Songs like "Venial Sin" showcase the less than stellar vocals from Vince Santonastaso, with his off kilter lyrical delivery, while "All The Same" starts with a very Slayer-like staccato guitar thumping that features the very 80's Thrash-like chorus chant of the song title. Symetria does keep it old school, but I'm not sure if this is the good old school or not.

Overall, I found Symetria's debut to be quite a lackluster one. As a kid that grew up in this era and still lives in the Tri-State area, this effort reminds me of bands demo tapes that you would be given for free at a show or at a local record store, the type of record that you would make it through half the demo and then move on. This album has that same simple and unmemorable quality to it. The musicianship is average at best and I found their songs to follow in that vein, the type of playing and writing that comes along with a bands first efforts of writing their own material. I give Symetria credit for trying to use that "Old School Metal" tag, but that's as far as they come to capturing that hallowed time in Metal.
