Joe Caro & The Met Band: Every Dog Has His Day

Veteran session guitarist Joe Caro has gotten together with The Met Band once again releasing Every Dog Has His Day, the follow up to Live in New York City released in 2013 and his 2011 solo effort Home Alone.

A few notables appearing on the album are Anton Fig (drums on tracks 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11), Mark Egan (bass on tracks 3, 9, 10 ,12), Paul Shaffer (organ on tracks 9 and 11) and Chris Palmaro (keyboards on tracks 1, 2, 3, 5 ,6, 7, 8, 9, 11) to name but a few.

Every Dog Has His Day is a solid R&B album with the occasional jazz flavouring as well beginning with a reworked version of the classic Dylan track "Highway 61 (revisited)". It's a fiery rendition with bursts of horns, excellent drum work and searing blues guitar. On "Hot Mess", an original tune with a memorable Steely Dan-like chorus, quiet guitar chords and languid bass slide into the groove as dreamy keyboard embellishments having a Doors-like touch add a late '60s early '70s flair. The guitar work is slow and luxurious. "Information Junkie" is another laid back original complete with a sinuous bluesy groove and a catchy sax solo. Caro's fiery guitar on Hendrix's "Fire" is some of his best work on the disc and really the entire band is well, on fire. There are no weak tracks here with the originals just as enjoyable as the reimagined classics including the Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer classic "That Old Black Magic" where the music drips nostalgia and the sax and trumpet solos are just about perfect.

Catchy melodies and excellent arrangements abound making Every Dog Has His Day a fine listen. Rock, blues and jazz fans should all be suitably impressed.
