Moore, Steve: Mayhem—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

A few weeks ago, I saw John Carpenter perform a large selection of music from his films. The venue was packed and fans cheered as they recognized the opening notes of their favorite scores. Carpenter's soundtracks have been popular for decades and his recent success on the road demonstrates a renewed interest in hearing this style of music. Carpenter was a pioneer in using synthesizers in his film scores and his work has influenced countless others. For many fans, his music has taken on a life of its own, creating a subgenre that is immediately recognizable—and usually appreciated. It seems that fans simply can't get enough.

I mention all this because Steve Moore is certainly one of those musicians who owes a debt to Carpenter. It's possible that some readers will want to know if the connections between Moore and Carpenter are superficial, as if the former is only copying the latter. My answer is that Moore is carrying on an important tradition, one that values the tense, pulsating, synthesized music we hear on his soundtracks. He is also a talented composer and arranger who knows how to craft a soundtrack in ways that give it the feel and flavor of an album. I've listened to this album multiple times over the last couple of weeks and I still find it exciting and surprising. Many readers will know Moore for his work with Zombi, but his soundtracks are definitely worth checking out. Highly recommended!
