Lapin Helvetti: Lapin Helvetti

When I reviewed Terveet Kädet's Lapin Helvetti on this site a few years ago I praised it as a superb punk rock album. I was so excited about that album that I listened to it for a long time and even turned a few friends onto this legendary Finnish hardcore band. I am a big fan of hardcore punk and this album definitely became a new favorite.

When I received the promo for a band called Lapin Helvetti, the name of Terveet Kädet's last release, I was slightly confused. What was this? As it turns out, this is a new band, formed after Terveet Kädet decided to end things after 30 years of hardcore mania. As I prepared to listen to this, I was honestly a little scared! Was this just some cheap project and nothing more? I didn't want that. I was also really curious about what happened with Terveet Kädet. I still don't have much information other than this band draws on classic Motörhead, Slayer, and Venom to create a style that is also one part black metal and another part hardcore. Now that I've listened to this album a few times, I just want to call this raw and energetic heavy music. It is less hardcore than fans might expect but there's no loss of power and attitude. Just check out tracks like "Raskas Maa," "Sankarijuhlat," and "T.t.k" for an introduction. Those were my favorite tracks and will certainly give anyone a solid sense of what these guys are up to. I also really enjoyed "Mikään Hynä Ei Kestä Kauan" because it had a chuggy riff that could have been on Metallica's Kill 'Em All. The songs are slightly longer than the average Terveet Kädet track, but nothing feels padded or dragged out. This is an exciting and raw new album, definitely worth checking out.
